Mrs. Jana Weeks and Mrs. Jennefer Weeks Massey brought their art classes together for a collaborative and engaging experience titled The Great Monster Exchange. This project was designed to show students how ideas can be communicated and shared through art. It involved students from Mrs. Rademacher-Smith’s fifth grade class at Sugar Creek Consolidated, as well as students from Mrs. Harris’s, Mrs. Yunker’s, and Mrs. Switzer’s classes at Benjamin Franklin Elementary.

To begin, each student created an original monster and wrote a detailed description of it. These descriptions were then exchanged between classes, and students used them to draw their own interpretations of a partner’s monster. Finally, students brought their interpretations of their partner's monster to life by sculpting the monsters out of clay and painting them.

Through The Great Monster Exchange, students explored how words can inspire a variety of visual interpretations, highlighting the unique ways individuals understand and express ideas.
